Is usually seen in antique red, antique green, or varying shades of browns and tans. But recently, demand has been high for less ‘convetional’ finishes.
Take for example, a recent trade customer, who is shortly to be supplied with a number of Chesterfield Club Chairs in… wait for it… PVC!
Yes, we now cater for a niche of this niche market, who desire brilliant white pvc chesterfield club chairs.
- Positives? wipe clean, durable, unique.
- Negatives? not great for sitting in on a hot day, and can be a little slippery!

This is a question we are often asked at Distinctive Chesterfields- the leather chesterfield sofa company
The answer lies in History, over a hundred years ago. In Victorian times, society was very different. The way we intgrated as man and woman, and the social standings of the classes, was totally different. Due to the rise and rise or the City Gent, there was an increasingly popular wave of new ‘clubs’ whose membership was entirely male, who would provide a civilised, woman free environment for this upper crust of society to socialise in.
They would be fitted out in a style similar to that of a grand study or smoking room, and would be equipped with snall nests of tables and chairs.
The Chairs were always of low, level backed construction, usually fully buttoned or tufted in the style of a chesterfield sofa. Always covered in a dark leather – most commonly green, brown, or red, these chairs became known as ‘club chairs‘ – a term which stuck and is used still today

Here at Distinctive Chesterfields, we are often asked ‘what is a club chair?’
The answer is often hard because club chairs are different things to different people. For example, if you asked an officer in the RAF what a club chair was, he would probably describe a leather chesterfield low chair. The reason for this? because most if not all officers messes in the armed forces have these leather chairs in them.
Yet ask the owner of a swanky town centre bar and he may well describe something completly different.
To answer this question properly, we must first answer another question- Where did the name club chair come from?
So if you have followed the link above, and understand where then term club chair has come from, then you can agree that the the original club chairs were fully buttoned chesterfield chairs, with level arms and back and so shaped to aide the waitress in seeing when their customer was in need of topping up.
