These chairs were first seen in gentlemen’s clubs in the 1850′s and were designed to accomodate a man’s frame, especially those of the wealthier class who were often a little larger than their lower class counterparts. The chairs were of a rubust and masculine design often incorperating dark woods and strong, hard-wearing leathers. The design was simple yet surprisingly comfortable for those able to use them.

The chairs became less exclusive in the 20th century when more and more people began having them in their homes and offices. Today these fine chairs can be found in many upscale and casual environments giving style and comfort to all that use them.

This is a question we are often asked at Distinctive Chesterfields – the leather chesterfield sofa company

The answer lies in History, over a hundred years ago. In Victorian times, society was very different. The way we intgrated as man and woman, and the social standings of the classes, was totally different. Due to the rise and rise or the City Gent, there was an increasingly popular wave of new ‘clubs’ whose membership was entirely male, who would provide a civilised, woman free environment for this upper crust of society to socialise in.

They would be fitted out in a style similar to that of a grand study or smoking room, and would be equipped with snall nests of tables and chairs.

The Chairs were always of low, level backed construction, usually fully buttoned or tufted in the style of a chesterfield sofa. Always covered in a dark leather – most commonly green, brown, or red, these chairs became known as ‘club chairs‘ – a term which stuck and is used still today
